Unsettled By Joy

Joy may knock unexpectedly. Let's let her in.

Sometimes, there is joy…and you feel suspicious.

Um, excuse me, where did you come from?

    Also. Where have you been??

It doesn’t make too much sense for joy to be here since it’s been pretty bleak lately, with plenty of justification to feel other things. Like sadness or anxiety or pain. Certainly not joy.

But she arrives in a flash. You smile at a little thing like how your coffee smells. You notice your heart has a little hope for the day, for no particular reason.

The weight of loss, of unmade decisions, of uncertain paths, has lightened. Huh.

That’s what joy does. She helps carry the load.

Yet trying to figure out where joy came from (is she even authorized here?) will quickly send her packing.

Maybe you don’t need to have done something to deserve joy.

What if you let her be? We never know how long joy will stay. And you need a visitor like this.

Surprise guests can be unwelcome. But we can make exceptions.

Why not for joy?
