Hiding is easy and safe. Choosing to live is risky — and more rewarding.

If you are nursing an injury or tending to pain, congratulations. It's time to celebrate.

You understand that doing a hard thing can bring more comfort than never attempting it. This is a courage fueled by your values.

It’s unlikely you’ll get injured if you never move. If you never jump, push, pull, dive, or climb.

You won’t have much pain if you hide away. If you never share, open, trust, or connect.

Of course it is safer to avoid the muddy trail, to avert the confessing conversation, to stay off the court and out of the spotlight.

But who really wants to prioritize safety above all else? Sure, we can hide away and never put ourselves out there, and we won’t get hurt. Yet those who have tried it realize that avoidance brings a different kind of suffering.

Each day offers us the opportunity to purchase more time living, and yes, the cost can be high. There could be broken bones, and there will definitely be broken hearts.

You may need extensive recovery time and more physical therapy (and perhaps psychotherapy) than you could have imagined.

But the scars remind you that you did not let fear keep you from living.

Pain and injuries to our insides and outsides are the cost of doing business in this life.

If you are hurting, you are alive. And that really is worth celebrating.
