Welcome to the Unknown

Control is an alluring illusion. What if we let it go?

We like certainty, predictability. A sense of control. When things fall into place, just as we planned.

But so often, everything hits the fan.

Despite our careful preparation, suddenly we are in the unknown.

And we don’t know what to do there. Take a right? A left? Make a new plan? Or proceed straight into the darkness?

But stepping into the unknown is all we’ve ever known. We just pretend otherwise.

The illusion of control and predictability calls to us. Like a calming drug, we need it. We crave it, some of us more than others.

We can make plans. We can set goals. We can have hopes and wishes and expectations. But we cannot dictate much beyond our own next choice.

Recognizing we live in the unknown and unpredictable is scary, and yet here we are.

Pretending otherwise leads to a lot of pain, for ourselves and the people around us.

When plans for your life (or someone else’s) have vanished like a sand castle hit by a wave, welcome.

Welcome to what has always been. To acknowledging a life that does not bend to your will.

There is ease here amongst those whose grasps have softened, who practice letting go — firmly grounded, yet flexible as a reed.

We can hold what we strive for with gentle hope, not illusory control.

Welcome to navigating the unknown, now knowing it has always been unknown.
